From graduate to front-end developer

I spent 6 months of my life after uni waking up at 11:30pm, browsing the internet, eating, watching TV then going back to sleep and occasionally I‘d go out. This was my daily routine. It was a comfortable stage in my life, but I knew to get into the field I was passionate about I needed to get out of this rut, getting out of my comfort zone and perhaps risking damaging my ego – I needed a job in the web industry. That’s exactly what I did, it wasn’t easy. I applied to at least 3 jobs a day for a few weeks, called up agencies for vacancies, attended a few interviews, was let down on these interviews and was disheartened for a moment until that day I got a the job at Surface Media.

Plenty of things have changed since working at Surface Media. It feels good to wake up in the morning knowing that you’re going to a job that you love – not many people get that chance. As a Junior front-end developer my job is to develop designs to work in a browser. I love doing front-end work but the awesome thing is, is that Surface Media has also given me the chance to work on all different parts of the design and development process, I get to attend meetings, alter designs and develop all different types of digital media and even occasionally write blogs. One important thing that I have learnt is that taking onboard clients is like a journey. You don’t just make a website for them and never communicate with them again but you form a client relationship with ongoing help even when development has finished, which is the proper service that we at Surface Media provide, I know shame-less self-promotion but it’s true.

Exactly a month has passed since the meeting and email from Matt Arthur to say that I had got the job. I’m enjoying working at Surface Media. The team has provided me with plenty of help and I have already learnt so much. Not many digital agencies offer graduates this type of opportunity. My advice to graduates out there trying to find a job in this industry is to keep at it; I reckon the best technique is cold calling agencies for work, you never know what might pop up. The advantage of cold calling is that you get a response straight away, they might tell you to send in your resume and portfolio but at least they can remember you from the call you made a couple of days ago.

It’s great working here the whole experience has opened my eyes and made me appreciate this job, I can now blog to you all about how amazing it is to do what you love and only hope others may find that sense of purpose as this job has for me. I look forward to the challenges and experiences this job will offer as well as a long and fulfilling time working at Surface Media.
